Background

This is just one of hundreds of free explanations I've created to the quantitative questions in The Official Guide for GMAT Review (12th ed.). Click the links on the question number, difficulty level, and categories to find explanations for other problems.

These are the same explanations that are featured in my "Guides to the Official Guide" PDF booklets. However, because of the limitations of HTML and cross-browser compatibility, some mathematical concepts, such as fractions and roots, do not display as clearly online.

Question: 22
Page: 274
Difficulty: 3 (Very Easy)
Category 1: Word Problems > Other >

Explanation: There are four variables implied by the question: the cost and number of ounces of the regular - size box, and the cost and number of ounces of the family - size box. We're looking for the ratio of the last two.

Statement (1) is insufficient. It gives us a relationship between the number of ounces in the two boxes, but nothing about cost.

Statement (2) is also insufficient. It gives us the cost of the family - size box, but nothing about the number of ounces.

Taken together, the statements are still insufficient. For the cost per ounce of the family - size box, we would need both the price (which (2) gives us) and the number of ounces. We know only that the family - size box has 10 more ounces than the regular - size box, but not an actual number of ounces. Choice (E) is correct.
