Data Sufficiency #103

Background

This is just one of hundreds of free explanations I've created to the quantitative questions in The Official Guide for GMAT Review (12th ed.). Click the links on the question number, difficulty level, and categories to find explanations for other problems.

These are the same explanations that are featured in my "Guides to the Official Guide" PDF booklets. However, because of the limitations of HTML and cross-browser compatibility, some mathematical concepts, such as fractions and roots, do not display as clearly online.

Question: 103
Page: 281
Difficulty: 5 (Moderate)
Category 1: Arithmetic > Ratio and Proportion >
Category 2: Word Problems > Rate Problems > Speed

Explanation: Given a number of frames, you will need a rate of display to determine the amount of time it takes to run the cartoon. Statement (1) does that: while the rate is in terms of seconds instead of minutes, that can be converted, so the statement is sufficient.

Statement (2) is more involved, but still sufficient. If it takes x minutes to run the cartoon, it takes ((x)/6) minutes to rewind it, for a total of ((7x)/6) minutes, which is equal to 14. If ((7x)/6) = 14, you can solve for x, the amount of time it takes to run the cartoon. Both statements are sufficient, so the correct choice is (D).
