Official Guide Explanation:
Data Sufficiency #36

Background

This is just one of hundreds of free explanations I've created to the quantitative questions in The Official Guide for GMAT Quantitative Review (2nd ed.). Click the links on the question number, difficulty level, and categories to find explanations for other problems.

These are the same explanations that are featured in my "Guides to the Official Guide" PDF booklets. However, because of the limitations of HTML and cross-browser compatibility, some mathematical concepts, such as fractions and roots, do not display as clearly online.

Question: 36
Page: 155
Difficulty: 3 (Very Easy)
Category 1: Word Problems > Other >
Category 2: Arithmetic > Percents > other

Explanation: The find Elena's total salary and commissions, you'll either need both of those numbers, or her salary as well as her sales revenue and her commissions percentage. Statement (1) is insufficient, as it does not address her commissions. Statement (2) is insufficient, as it doesn't provide her salary or her sales revenue.

Taken together, the statements are insufficient. Without her sales revenue, it's impossible to determine her commission, without which you cannot find her total compensation. (E) is the correct choice.
