Official Guide Explanation:
Data Sufficiency #99

Background

This is just one of hundreds of free explanations I've created to the quantitative questions in The Official Guide for GMAT Quantitative Review (2nd ed.). Click the links on the question number, difficulty level, and categories to find explanations for other problems.

These are the same explanations that are featured in my "Guides to the Official Guide" PDF booklets. However, because of the limitations of HTML and cross-browser compatibility, some mathematical concepts, such as fractions and roots, do not display as clearly online.

Question: 99
Page: 160
Difficulty: 5 (Moderate)
Category 1: Geometry > Circles > Multiple figures
Category 2: Word Problems > Geometry Problems >

Explanation: The distance from the center of the pool's base to point A is the radius of the base, so any characteristic of the circle--the radius, the circumference, or the diameter--will be enough information.

Statement (1) is sufficient: with the area of the base, you can find the radius, or the distance from the center to point A. Statement (2) is insufficient: the relationship between the distance from the center to C and the radius of the circle is not clear; you would need more information about the lengths of AC or AB, or the measure of angle C. Choice (A) is correct.
