GMAT Phone Consultations With Jeff Sackmann

Studying for the GMAT? You should follow me on Twitter. Also a good idea: subscribe to GMAT Hacks via RSS or Email.

For about eight years, I've provided in-person GMAT tutoring sessions for aspiring MBA students. Recently, I've begun offering phone consultations as well. If you don't live in the New York City area, it's a great way to talk through your situation and determine how to maximize your efforts.

Update, July 2010: At this time, my schedule does not allow me to accept any new students. I expect this will be the case for at least the next few months. If anything changes, I will update this page.

As you might imagine, there are pros and cons to phone consultations, compared to in-person tutoring. While it's possible to work through practice problems over the phone, it isn't ideal. But there are many important topics that we can effectively cover in a phone consultation:

  • Setting up a study plan
  • General test strategy
  • Identifying problem areas
  • Addressing difficult content areas

Really, it's up to you. This list is intended only to give you a general idea.

Preparing for a Phone Consultation

The most effective phone sessions are those in which students know exactly what they'd like to accomplish. It is a good idea to write down a long list of topics or questions, and it's better to write down too many than too few.

How long we spend on each topic can vary tremendously; it may take half an hour or more to work out an appropriate study plan for your situation, while there are other questions that I can quickly address.

Rates and Availability

At the present time, I am offering one-hour phone consultations for $175. Sessions can run longer; additional hours are also $175, and partial hours are billed on a pro-rated basis. (For instance, a 1.5 hour session would be $262.50.) There is a one-hour minimum for each consultation.

I have a limited amount of time per week to devote to phone meetings; if demand is overwhelming, I may have to raise that rate.

In general, the best times for phone consultations are between 1 and 5PM (EST) on weekdays; weekend afternoons are possible as well. To set up a consultation, please contact me directly.
